Laban, Leah, and the God Who Sees the Unloved. Genesis: 29-31
In this episode…. Jacob arrives in Haran, rolls a stone from a well, falls in love with Rachel, and serves seven years that feel like a few days.
And then, on his wedding morning, come four devastating words: “behold, it was Leah.”
The man who dressed as his older brother to steal a blessing is handed the older sister in the dark – and Laban says it with a smile: we do not put the younger before the firstborn around here.
The deceiver has been deceived.
But the heart of these chapters is not Jacob at all. It is Leah – unwanted, unchosen, and unloved – of whom Scripture says simply: “when the LORD saw that Leah was hated, he opened her womb.”
We follow her through four sons whose names trace a broken heart reaching for a husband who will not turn around… until the fourth, when she finally stops reaching and says, “This time I will praise the LORD.”
She calls him Judah. And out of Judah – out of the line of the wife nobody wanted – comes David, and Bethlehem, and a Saviour who was Himself despised and rejected, so that we might be called beloved….
